The rate of oxygen consumption in relation to heteroplasmy levels for the A3243G mutation. Human osteosarcoma cells were repopulated
with donor mitochondria originating from fibroblasts from patients carrying the A3243G mutation in the heteroplasmic state.
Individual clones were isolated, and heteroplasmy levels and the rate of oxygen consumption were determined. Oxygen consumption
for each clone is represented in relation to the degree of heteroplasmy. A 50% decline in the rate of oxygen consumption occurs
at ∼85% heteroplasmy.
