Representative transmission electron microscopy of longitudinal sections of human skeletal muscle from a lean (T) and a type
2 diabetic (DM) research volunteer are shown (bar = 2.5 μm). The thickness of the perinuclear distribution of subsarcolemmal
mitochondria was measured using image analysis (National Institutes of Health image 1.61) and can be observed to be substantially
depleted in type 2 diabetes.
