  • Data are n or n (%). Sepsis was defined using modified Bone criteria (ref. 21) as suspected or documented infection on ICU admission day and fulfilment of at least two of three systematic inflammatory response syndrome criteria for which data were available: 1) receiving ventilatory support, 2) white blood cell count ≤4,000 or ≥12,000/l, and 3) temperature ≤36 or ≥38°C. Patients after cardiac surgery or trauma were excluded for this definition.
